Michigan students facing educational neglect is a ‘hidden problem’

No one particular seems to know how quite a few Michigan small children are going with no an education.

But a No cost Press tale about a 12-12 months-old Michigan woman, Jo, who struggles to browse and has almost never stepped foot into a classroom, has some lawmakers and advocates thinking about ways to avert academic neglect.

Jo’s moms and dads did not send their three kids to school, and told investigators with Kid’s Protective Expert services that they had been dwelling-schooling Jo and her two siblings. But spouse and children members, close friends and courtroom documents contradict the parents’ declare.

Michigan legislation needs minor oversight above house-schooled learners: Parents never have to register their kids with the condition or their area school district, like they do in other states. No state agency will look into academic neglect claims unless they come with other statements of neglect or abuse.
